Languages

[edit]

Hello, even though you're on wikivacation, would you mind putting up which langauges you speak? I have a feeling I might want to drag you off to some wikiprojects when you get back from vacation. :-P

For examples of languages, see User:Kim Bruning or bottom of User:PZFUN maybe :-) There's templates for it! Kim Bruning 10:02, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Urdu blogs and all that ...

[edit]

Good news re the Urdu blog blossoming! Just be sure to keep in touch with the folks at Distributed Proofreaders Europe <http://dp.rastko.net/default.php>. I don't make it by there all that often, but they do have a team turning public domain texts in Urdu into e-books. If you put their output into an Urdu Wikibooks section, you'd have the beginnings of an easily accessible Urdu free library.

Is there any way to automagically convert Urdu in Arabic script into Urdu in Devanagari? It would be cool if people could just click a button to put everything into their preferred script. Zora 19:05, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

P.S. I just started an article called Historiography of early Islam. It's just an outline right now. It's needed, but I'm going to have to give myself an M.A. or Ph.D.-equivalent course of study to complete it. Would appreciate your thoughts. Zora 06:08, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Discussion at Talk:Pakistan

[edit]

Would you like to join the animated discussion on the Pakistan's talk page? The current issue is whether "Pakistan is famous for its support of Taliban and 9/11 terrorist" is a suitable sentence to start the article's first paragraph or not. Your contribution would be much appreciated, as the current discussion seems to be more of a dialog between User:Ragib and SamTr014 (talk · contribs). Thanks !--Sheikhu 05:44, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Would you message User:OmerFa. He keeps making anti-India edits and makes personal attacks against User:Ragib. He would perhaps listen to you. Thanks, =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:46, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)

Now he is making anti-Pakistan edits in the Kashmir article by saying that "gujarath maratyrs" need mention. He is inserting highly anti-Pakistani pro-Indian POV. Like I have said before to many users, he is most likely a sockpuppet, or an Indian editor posing as a Pakistani. I just wanted to make you aware. --Anonymous editor 02:50, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)

Benazir Bhutto

[edit]

R you interested in to join the discussion of cleaning up the article of Benazir Bhutto? Talk:Benazir Bhutto--Raju1 03:08, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

This seems presumptuous even as I write it but I congratulate you on the truly excellent picture of Benazir Bhutto that is used on the front page today. It is well-designed, remarkably well for a shapshot, and works very well at the size that is needed for the front page. JimCubb 16:46, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ms Bhutto's return to Pakistan was certainly news-worthy. A picture was needed for the news section. Your picture of Ms Bhutto was selected. The day it first appeared was no more than the fourth time I have looked at the picture at the top of the news and did not have to search through the "headlines" to determine who or what was pictured.

As I wrote above, it is a very good picture of a very attractive, middle-aged, remarkable woman.

Thank you for taking it and thank you for allowing it to be used.

Kausar revisited

[edit]

Hi!

If you remember our previous conversation on the subject (at Talk:Sarabseth), I had said I would try to find the references that had convinced me Saqi-e-Kausar referred to Ali.

Here are two: 1) One of Nusrat's qawwalis has the line: "Ali nu baksheya Khaliq ne Kausar". I'm pretty sure this is from "Ali Maula Ali Maula Ali Dam Dam", T-Series vol. 31.

1) Another of Nusrat's qawwalis has the lines: "Har gham ki tadbeer Ali hai Kausar ki tafseer Ali hai" (I forgot to note which song/album this is from. It could well be the same song listed above.)

Tafseer means explanation or elucidation, right?

Could you possibly explain the meaning of these lines?

Thanks! Sarabseth 00:07, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Terrorism in Kashmir

[edit]

User:Nichalp and User:Anonymous editor suggested me to review the article on Terrorism in Kashmir from a Pakistani. So, here I am. Please if possible, go through the article and suggest necessary changes so as to help make it more neutral. Once the task is completed, I will put it up for a featured status. Thanks --IncMan June 30, 2005 05:45 (UTC)

Thanks for your message, IFaqeer. Yes, the article has become more objective in recent days, but I'm afraid it is still being plagued with non-neutral information. Since, there are no regular Pakistani editors at that article (for some reason), I thought the article could use some. I am glad to see that you are eager to help and I will keep you updated for any issues that need to be resolved later. Thanks. --Anonymous editor June 30, 2005 17:36 (UTC)

I really did not have any part to play in the edits of the article. I just asked IncMan to get all views into the picture. Credit should be given to the editors of the article, not me. =Nichalp «Talk»= June 30, 2005 17:39 (UTC)

Thanks for going through the article.

  • The article does at some places mix-up terrorism and militancy. I will try to sort that out. I agree with the notion that all militancy is not of terroristic nature. But I'm afraid to say that there are only a handfull of militants who don't use terrorism as a mean to achieve their goals.
  • Think if the article is renamed as Militancy in Kashmir, it would confuse a neutral reader as the article contains information regarding the terrorism (refering to sections like "Major terrorist activities" and "Waging Jihad") and not militancy.
  • I wanted to mention Zial Haq's role but didn't do so as some would have objected to it.

"Fifth Right Guided Caliph" ref in Aurangzeb article

[edit]

hi ifaqeer. I've been reworking the Aurangzeb article fairly hard. I have not been able to find any references to Aurangzeb being called the Fifth Right-guided Caliph other than your own, at least not via a web search. In fact a google search shows mostly a propogation of this sentence in sites that copy wiki articles in whole cloth. This claim, it seems to me, would have some associated independent docs. Lacking these, I've taken the step of removing the reference -- but I will gladly rv it, particularly if you can provide some help in verifying? thanks --Nemonoman 7 July 2005 01:33 (UTC)

Arabic/Devanagari scripts in Bollywood articles

[edit]

Dear IFaqeer, you may need to come back for this one. Some editors want to put either Arabic or Devanagari script, or both, next to actors' names, to indicate the correct pronunciation. I'd prefer NEITHER or BOTH. But then ... use of Arabic script in Bollywood seems to be dropping, and just Devanagari might be the current practice there. I feel like I'm walking through a minefield. Please help us achieve a peaceful consensus on this. Zora 20:45, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hausa Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi IFaqeer,

I was wondering, have you ever considered doing some work for the Hausa Wikipedia?

It's in a pretty severe state of disrepair right now and could use some help. The best thing anyone could probably do for it would be to get sysop status there, and translate the user interface. Maybe create a few articles, too...

See the Hausa Wikipedia.

Also, I was wondering if you could give me the translation for the logo? The text is "Wikipedia -- the free encyclopedia". In this case, "free" means as in free software, not as in "free beer".

Urdu Templates

[edit]

Salam! The moved links look good - don't know what I was thinking. And the reason for using Naskh instead of the Nastaliq was because Nastaliq doesn't exactly flow well on one line, and looked rather messy for what should be a clean cut template box. because Skoosh thinks that "someone might complain if you tried to pass off "chicken" and "shop" as Urdu words." Indeed I don't understand the usage: it is that the Eng words "chicken" and "shop" have been absorbed into Urdu? (i.e. like the words "fast food" that have been absorbed into French) Or is it that the chicken stall's owner just use the Eng words because he likes that, not because most ppl use the Eng form? Hi,

We started a proposal Wikipedia:Wikiethics to state the existing policies coherently and make suggestions on improving the editorial standards in Wiki. I thought you might be interested in contributing to that proposal.

Unfortunately, a pro-porn and pro-offense lobby is trying to make this proposal a failure. They unilaterally started an approval poll although almost no one including me believe that it is time for a vote, simply because the policy is not ready. It is not even written completely.

Editors who thinks that it needs to be improved rather than killed by an unfair poll at the beginning of the proposal, started another poll ('Do we really need a poll at this stage?') at the same time. The poll is vandalized for a while but it is stable now. A NO vote on this ('Do we really need a poll now?') poll will strengthen the position of the editors who are willing to improve the policy further.

If you have concerns about the ethics and editorial standards in Wiki, please visit the page Wikipedia:Wikiethics with your suggestions on the policy. We have two subpages: Arguments and Sections. You might want to consider reviewing these pages as well...

Thanks in advance. Resid Gulerdem 20:29, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help with translation

Assalamalaikum bhai saheb. The Hindi-Urdu grammar and Hindustani grammar articles have coexisted for a while now but we have all realized that the Hindustani grammar article is a recent duplicate with the only differece being dual scripted and not as up to date. However, due to a recent discussion (see Talk:Hindustani grammar), the Hindustani grammar article is now officially being merged into the Hindi-Urdu grammar article because the Hindi-Urdu grammar article is more up to date and accurate. As of now, we are adding the Nastaliq script to the article. Devanagari has already been done. After the Nastaliq script has been added, Hindustani grammar will be deleted and Hindi-Urdu grammar will be the main grammar page for Urdu, Hindustani, and Hindi languages. I am requesting you to please help me add the Nastaliq script to the Hindi-Urdu grammar article as this is a gargantuan but rewarding task. I would really appreciate you help. Please let me know if you can help me do this. Bahut Bahut Shukria. Khuda Hafiz. Jdas07 04:00, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking a look at the article. I and a few others have some knowledge on the subject. The grammars are virtually identical. The only minor difference is that Urdu more strongly preserves the femenine agreement in some postpositions, whereas not as many Hindi speakers do. This is mentioned in the article. As per Talk:Hindustani grammar, many of us came to a consesus and decided that there would be one grammar article for Hindustani, Hindi, and Urdu (in the past, all the articles had their grammar page redirect to Hindi grammar). Taxman, an administrator and knowledgeable individual, is helping to organize the project. I asked a few others to help us on this project as well. Do you think you would still be able to help add Nastaliq to some tables? Khuda Hafiz. Jdas07 01:45, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Info on Islamophobic group

[edit]

Hello,

What follows are the sentiments, expressed in their own words, and in the 'protest signs', of the obscure, very small, but very vocal 'activist group' known as "Protest Warrior".

"What's becoming clear is how the religion of Islam is addicted to war and mayhem. Not a radical minority, not a rogue sect, but its very essence is about submission and sacrifice and proving your worth by worshipping death in this life to gain a paradise of orgies and drunkenness. Their entire history is of warfare, and any accomplishments of their so-called Golden Age has been proven to be merely parasitic off the cultures they've conquered and reduced to dhimmi servitude. That every country under sharia is corrupt, belligerent, desolate and barbaric obviously gives them no pause, except to constantly drive them into further psychotic rage as they refuse to ever accept any responsibility for their conditions. They are akin to the powers in Orwell's 1984; there must always be an enemy. It's no surprise that women are treated like property in these countries as that's the only way Muslim men can feed their egos, to dominate others rather than ever actually produce something."

Kfir Alfia and Alan Lipton, founders of "Protest Warrior"

Their 'protest signs'...

Signs

I thought you might be interested in this group's sentiments. They are currently very actively editing their own article on Wiki and there is a lot of 'group think'. Perhaps you might want to become involved in the editing and discussion process on that page. If you do, please don't vandalize, and try to remain civil. Should you not want to involve youself, please forgive my intrusion.

Third holiest site in Islam AfD debate

Hi, I hope your have voted for Keep after reading the AFD debate and the article. If not than please take a closer look at it. thank you. --- ALM 02:21, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It not the content but topic is wrong. See Striver comments (in reply to your vote and also in his own vote). Read the AFD page completely and then decide please. We need to think if such debate really exists among Muslims?
All sunni recognize Al-Aqsa Mosque as third holiest site and there is no debate among Sunnis (no reference is founded so far). Al-Aqsa Mosque was our first Kaba towards where we continue to offer our Namaz for more than year before Kaba replaced it. It was the place from where Muhammad gone to Miraj. Furthermore, there are many other hadiths in shahi Bukari about [Al-Aqsa Mosque]] status as third holiest site.
Some Shia reference denying Al-Aqsa Mosque third holiest status are founded. However, many Shia are active in wikipedia and they are very knowledgeable for example User:Striver, User:Aminz, User:BhaiSaab etc. They ALL think that it not Shia view and hence does looks like main stream Shia also believe Al-Aqsa Mosque as third holiest.
So they have used references from CNN and BBC to decline all Muslims claim because Al-Aqsa Mosque is located in Israel. One can find same News channel two different reports saying different site holier over other. Hence those claims using Media websites are not reliable to create this controversy article when no controvery exist amoung Muslims. There is no reason to deny all Muslims claim for Al-Aqsa mosque status. Hence please reconsider it. --- ALM 02:54, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
After reading my above post also read the comments of people to your Keep at the AFD page. It is because so far you are the only Muslim voted for Keep. Wassalam --- ALM 00:00, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, I found it funny that you expressed a desire to keep this article. Have you acutally read the article in question? The reasoning you expressed for why the article should be kept is the exact reason many folks are expressing the opinion that it should be deleted (myself included). Are you sure you want the article kept? All that it does is create an otherwise non-existant debate about "the third holiest" site. Thanks. (Netscott) 02:35, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well corresponding to your apparent optimism about rendering the article meaningful relative to Wikipedia's policies I would recommend trying to edit it. All that I see on it is a group of editors with strong Zionist POV trying to use Wikipedia as a soapbox to cast doubt about Al-Aqsa Mosque's status in the Muslim world. Cemendtaur

[edit]

What he said is probably alright. But, if you could ask him if CC-BY-SA is a good license that would be better. This is the template, Template:Cc-by-sa-2.5 and this is the actual license, http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/ It's the most conservative license allowed Wikipedia. If you can also get him to give exactly what he wants his accreditation line to be that would be great. Something like "Cemendtaur http://karachiphotoblog.blogspot.com/" I'd imagine, unless he (or she?) wants to give his real name. So, I think what he said is probably fine... http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/OTRS/permissions-en-guide may also be relevant but I've never done an OTRS ticket before. gren グレン 19:29, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do you happen to know the correct Urdu script translation for the word "Carnival" or "festival" - sorry to bother you but I'm having problems locating it on the net! please email rob (at) kic.me.uk ...thanks so much! Excalibur 11:35, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do you still need the text for Carnival (کارنیول) or festival (فیسٹیول)...or was it the actual Urdu word you wanted? That would be "Mela" (میلہ -- which came out better in the heading).
You're more than welcome. And thank you very, very much for providing the website link...it makes it all the more sweeter. Wish I could attend... --iFaqeer 09:54, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, regarding the Wikindia logo, you can use it for free, with no strings attached. The only reason I brought up copyright and fair use was to clarify that the images could be used freely in case anyone was highly concerned about copyvios. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Mustafa Kamil (academic), by Townblight (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Mustafa Kamil (academic) seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Mustafa Kamil (academic), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 17:04, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Here's what happened-- Someone listed it for speedy. I think it asserted a certain amount of notability, so I removed the tag, and placed one for notability, since the notability had been questioned and in fact needed further support. You then saw the speedy notice from the bot, and put a hangon tag, which was now unnecessary--and had the side-effect of listing it for speedy again (which you didnt realize), so I removed the hangon to get it off the page of articles that had been listed for speedy. (the reason it works this way is that the author of an article is supposed to just place the hangon tag and leave the speedy, and then an admin like me evaluates it, but often they place the hangon AND remove the speedy--which they shouldn't do--so it's programmed so the article still stays on the speedy list to be evaluated.)
At any rate, what's needed are some references. That he was tutor to distinguished people needs to be actually shown by a reference to some reliable source -- a newspaper or a magazine, print or web, English preferred but any language OK if a translation is given. In addition, that alone may not be enough. I remember one similar instance, and it was asked that he be shown to be notable independently from his own academic published work. If he was full professor at the University of Hawaii, it would go part-way, again, if documented. But he probably published some books also--so find them and list them. He was presumably chosen not for a general reputation of being clever, but because of his actual qualifications, so there should be something there. The odds are that whoever nominated it for speedy will in fact nominate it for afd in the next day or so, so I'd advise you to do this immediately. good luck with it. Arabic or Hausa (or both)?

[edit]

Hi IFaqeer. I'm expanding Kano, and one of the books I'm using says the following: "Ethiopia was called 'Habasha' ('Abyssinia') in Arabic, and the word was often used as a metaphor for the Hausa (baHabshe is 'Hausa' (singular) in Katsina dialect, and 'Bagauda', the name of the legendary Kano state founder, means 'the Copt')." The book is A History of African Societies to 1870, Isichei, and the passage in question is on page 233. Knowing you speak Hausa, do you know if Bagauda means "the Copt" in Arabic, or Hausa? Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article Mustafa Kamil (academic), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Notability of Harris Khalique

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Harris Khalique requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Eeekster (talk) 03:11, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mother India

[edit]

Hello. Concerning your contribution, Mother India (book), please note that Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted text or images obtained from other web sites or printed material, without the permission of the author(s). This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.amazon.com/Mother-India-Katherine-Mayo/dp/0837123097. As a copyright violation, Mother India (book) appears to qualify for deletion under the speedy deletion criteria. Mother India (book) has been tagged for deletion, and may have been deleted by the time you see this message.

If you believe that the article or image is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) then you should do one of the following:

  • If you have permission from the author, leave a message explaining the details at Talk:Mother India (book) and send an email with the message to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
  • If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain leave a note at Talk:Mother India (book) with a link to where we can find that note.
  • If you hold the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:Mother India (book).

However, for textual content, you may simply consider rewriting the content in your own words. Thank you.

that's the plan.

Actually the message came from User:WhaleyTim, I just moved it from your user page. I didn't notice it was unsigned...I see how you could have gotten the wrong impression :)

How are you doing? It's been years since I've seen you around. Guettarda (talk) 19:31, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Syed Rifat Mahmood, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing no content to the reader. Please note that external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article don't count as content. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello IFaqeer! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 3 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Hello, I hope you're doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. I know that you are also trying to obtain a Californian Chapter and I sincerely hope that you will succeed and I think that all the members of our association feel likewise because denying it implies, in my opinion, going against the spreading of knowledge creating boundaries to creativity and collective voluntary work. So maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this on your first page: Wikimedia CAT. Supporting us will be like giving equal opportunity to minorized languages, cultures and local or regional entities in the future! Thanks again, wishing you a great summer, take care, Sai an jima! Hi there! In the past, you've expressed an interest in local meetups of Wikipedians. Well, here's your chance! We'll meet up at a park in SF -- hopefully in the sun -- all other details are still in deliberation!

If this sounds fun, please add your name to the list: Wikipedia:Meetup/San Francisco/Wiknic and add that page to your watchlist. (And of course, feel free to edit that page with your ideas, questions, etc.) I look forward to wiknicking with you! -Pete (talk) 00:45, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pages to be restored

[edit]

Hi Sabahat, I just noticed your section on pages you think need to be restored. I was curious, so I clicked on them - but unless I'm missing something (maybe a name variant?), it looks like only one of them (Mustafa Kamil (academic)) previously had a Wikipedia article. Please let me know if you'd like some assistance in getting content restored; if nothing else, as an administrator, I'm able to access deleted content, and could send the text to you. (From what I could see in the earlier article, I don't see that Mr. Kamil would pass the notability threshold, but there may of course be things I'm not aware of that weren't clearly stated in that version of the article.) Anyway, feel free to ask if there's any way I can help. -Pete (talk) 18:50, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And if you are a Hausa native speaker, would you be interested in starting an article on the BBC on that Wiki? I have a full list at ha:User:WhisperToMe but BBC and RFI are the two biggest ones, I think WhisperToMe (talk) 17:06, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

SF edit-a-thons on March 7 and 8

[edit]
ArtAndFeminism (3/7) and International Women's Day (3/8)!

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

In celebration of WikiWomen's History Month, the SF Bay Area Wikipedia community has two events in early March -- please consider attending!

First, we have an ArtAndFeminism edit-a-thon, which will take place at the Kadist Art Foundation from 12 noon to 6pm on Saturday, March 7. We'll be one of many sites worldwide participating in this edit-a-thon on March 7th. So join us as we help improve Wikipedia's coverage of women artists and their works!

Second, we will be celebrating International Women's Day with the International Women's Day edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 8 from 1pm to 5pm at the Wikimedia Foundation. Our editing focus will be on women, of course!

I hope to see you there! Rosiestep (talk) - via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:06, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

To opt out of future mailings about SF meetups, please remove your name from this list.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Please join us in San Francisco!
A Wikipedia panel discussion about journalism
Panel discussion at a recent Wikipedia & Journalism event.

The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area will gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. We have two brief presentations lined up for our kickoff event in downtown San Francisco:

  • The Nueva Upper School recently hosted the first ever high school Wikipedia edit-a-thon. We will hear what interests them about Wikipedia, what they have learned so far, and what they hope to achieve.
  • Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. We will have beverages and light snacks.

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on this point.

Special announcement (secret for now but come and find out more!)
  • Join in on an in person Wikidojo!
Are you curious how your peers approach writing a Wikipedia article? This exercise, pioneered by Wikipedians Nikola Kalchev and Vassia Atanassova in 2015 and conducted in many places around the world, will help us all - from first-time wiki users to veteran Wikipedians - share ideas, while building an article together. If you have ideas (relating to Bay Area history, ideally) about a new article we could build (stubs and short existing articles are fine), please submit them ahead of time to coordinator Pete Forsyth. (User talk page or email is fine.)
Announcements and impromptu topics are welcome, too!

Some of us will be working on the Wikipedia article on basic income. All info here. Some good news - we do not have to be as strict about advance RSVP at Noisebridge, so bring spontaneous guests! Come and hang out, have some light snacks. Wi-Fi is available, so please bring your editing device if you plan to edit.

Hi folks,

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We make sure to allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. Free Wi-Fi is available so bring your editing devices. We will have beverages and light snacks. We will also have a brief presentation for your education and possible enjoyment:

  • Former EFF intern Marta Belcher will discuss crowdsourcing her Stanford Law School graduation speech using a wiki. The "WikiSpeech" was the subject of prominent national media attention in 2015, and more than half of her classmates contributed to writing and editing the commencement address via a wiki.

Please note: You should register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on the I.D. part. This also helps us figure out how much food and drink to bring in! Feel free to stop by even if only to say a quick hello, but you might have to give us a last minute call if you forget to RSVP. Also, don't be shy about hitting us up if you have thoughts on speakers or wiki-related activities.

We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, Wikipedia and Wikimedia enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We will have no formal agenda to allow people to freely share ideas and perhaps learn about Wikipedia through hands-on editing. Co-organizer Ben Creasy will be looking at election-related articles to enhance the information available in the upcoming November elections.

Official logo of Wiki Loves Monuments

Co-organizer Stephen LaPorte has suggested doing an upload-a-thon for Wiki Loves Monuments. Niki, the California coordinator for WLM will be in attendance. WLM is an annual event and the official dealine is Friday the 30th for submissions to count towards awards.

Or, you can grab a couch, a booth, or a stool and do your own thing.

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:51, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Coral (AI) moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Coral (AI), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. buidhe 01:58, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Coral (AI)

[edit]

Hello, IFaqeer. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Coral".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Richard Francis Burton, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages English and Italian. More genealogy, please!

[edit]

Hello, old friend. In ifaqeer.com you say, "I am also the founder for two Wikia wikis and a recovering Wikipediholic, remaining engaged with the Wikipedia and other wikis on issues where I can make a difference.". You were #1 on the Genealogy WikiCity once. Now you are #79 by edit-count on the twice renamed Familypedia.

You "can make a difference" by increasing the percentage of Nigerian and Asian content, and improving pages about Muhammad's descendants. See https://familypedia.wikia.org/wiki/Muhammad_(c570-632)/descendants, for example.

The site is much cleverer, and easier to use, than when you last edited.

Kind regards. Robin Patterson (talk) 08:23, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Welcoming New Volunteers
(25/06/2021)

We hereby want to officially welcome new volunteers who have recently joined the collaborative project and have volunteered to work in WP:NIGERIA. The arrival of new volunteers is often associated with the confusion of “what to do” on their part, it is then behoove of us to treat them with care, guide them, and protect them from the general pitfalls a new editor would most usually fall into. We are also admonished to clean up after them if they err and encourage them, most especially when they are genuine editors with potential to do good work not just for us, but for the community as a whole. Once more, we hereby thank all new editors who have volunteered to work here and hope they enjoy their stay here.

Requests for uncreated articles

Greetings & a great weekend to you all. It would be great if the (Requests for uncreated articles) section in our wiki project can be attended to & at least one article be created this weekend as some requests have been pending since 2016. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.

In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.

Notice

The article Zelin Coffee House has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Little indication of notability. Orphaned for a decade.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
