Portal talk:Israel/Did you know
Text space
[edit]Please don't include too much text here (we'll need to come up with some kind of a measure) First, it won't look good on the page. Second, there will be nothing left to say next time. ←Humus sapiens←Talk 10:13, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
- Hello Humus, good work so far! First of all, I just gave some major points, the text can be shrunk down. Secondly, are you kidding? There will never ever be "nothing to say next time" because this topic generates news EVERY day, so you have nothing to fear. Finally, my view is that people should have a strong first impression when first looking at this portal so that it will "hit them" and "grab their attention" and make them want to read more and come back for more. So based on your comments above, methinks you have nothing to be concerned about. IZAK 10:38, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
A POV DYK?
[edit]Unlike DYK on the main page, this portal DYK seems not to be highlighting recently created articles, but rather highlighting facts favourable to Israel. Of the current crop, the three bottom ones do not even link to any relevant articles. Could I suggest that the maintainers of this portal aim for a more neutral point of view in this section? Global Competitiveness Report
[edit]"Israel is ranked number 15 in the world in terms of economic competitiveness. That's ahead of Canada, Austria, France, Australia, Belgium and Ireland and the highest in the region by far, 17 places ahead of UAE in 32nd?" This is just plain false. Israel is actually ranked 23rd, more embarrassing for that statement... Israel is BELOW Canada, Austria, France, Australia, Belgium and Ireland(Although with Ireland this changes alot, as Israel and Ireland are neck and neck in nearly every list of things per capita) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.44.37.5 (talk) 22:20, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Indeed. I deleted it.Sboucher (talk) 21:31, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
Sources?
[edit]This page makes a lot of completely unsourced claims, and some of them appear to be false. (According to wikipedia's Israel article, it is only fourth in the world in scientific publications per capita. It is nowhere near number one in Nobel prizes per capita.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sboucher (talk • contribs) 20:52, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
...has absorbed 350% of its population
[edit]Please explain the calculation.
Mr.Shoval (talk) 21:44, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
- Well, something easy to calculate: if Israel had 650,000 Jews when declared its independence, 350% would be 2,275,000 people. According to this table, Israel absorbed even more immigrants since 1948. Here's a reference.--Michael Zeev (talk) 07:03, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
- thanks Mr.Shoval (talk) 07:18, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
- With all due respect to the tcata.com site, it is a great compilation for trivia quiz, but is it an info "source"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr.Shoval (talk • contribs) 11:22, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
- There are many sources about this topic. But I think you understand the point based on the Aliyah table.--Michael Zeev (talk) 11:34, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
scientific papers
[edit]The page claims that "Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation by a large margin, 109 per 10000 people. " I do not understand what this means. In what time period? Not per year, certainly. The only reference given is a video on youtube which I cannot watch because it is "private".
There is an interesting discussion here, with lots of real references. A diagram on this page in the Journal "Nature" claims that Israel published about 10000 papers in 2011, while Switzerland published about twice as many the same year. Israel and Switzerland both have approximately 8 million inhabitants.

Jerusalem, capital city?
[edit]I don't think we should refer to Jerusalem as the "capital city" of Israel without at least pointing to the article Positions on Jerusalem. -- 62.47.187.83 (talk) 23:40, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
