  • I've got a question: If the House articles are to be deleted based on their not being "encyclopedic," I'd like a good definition of the term encyclopedic. What sorts of things belong in the Wikipedia, what sorts of things should not be here, and why are the House articles in the later category? I've read the WP:NOT article, and from that gather that articles which are too general, only contain links, involve future events, are dictionary entries, etc., should be excluded. So what's the problem with the Caltech House pages? Is the complaint that as stubs, they merely repeated information available on the main Caltech page? That seems more like a reason to request that people augment the articles, not delete them. Is the problem the potential POV issue of Caltech students not reflecting impartially on the Houses? There are enough inter-House pseudo-rivelries (not to mention potential Rotation1 violations) to keep the articles honest. Seriously, I'm curious the real reasons people feel these articles should be deleted and never allowed to exist again. -- Caltech student 65.3.0.25 07:13, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC) I've decided it makes more sense to discuss this on the main page. I'll leave the second thread here, though, since the creation of a new page really is tangental to the main debate. -- Caltech student 65.3.0.25 09:23, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
  • Actually, it just occured to me that having a single House System at Caltech page makes more sense than individual pages for a few reasons. One, it provides the opportunity to talk about Rotation, full vs. social memberships, adding/dropping memberships, etc. in a context independent from any House. Two, even if some of the Houses are a bit weak on content, the complete House System at Caltech page will surely have enough content to justify its existence. Three, by having all the Houses on one page, extraneous information and biased POV will look more out of place and hopefully be self-edited sooner; if not, it's more likely members of other Houses will read the information if it's all on one page. Anyway, while I like the idea of each House having a separate page, I think it makes more sense for there to be just one House System at Caltech page. -- Caltech student 65.3.0.25 07:44, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
    • For whom it may concern, I've moved all the non-stub, non-extrenous information from the individual House pages to the House System at Caltech page. It sure would be nice to see what information the Lloyd and Ruddock pages might have had to add to the new page...but I guess it's more important to delete anything that may be non-"encyclopedic." -- Caltech student 65.3.0.25 08:34, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

1: Rotation rules require that no prefrosh (accepted student not yet in a House) be given information to unfairly bias them towards any one House. It's reasonable to say that posting potentially-biasing information in an open location such as the Wikipedia would be a Rotation violation, and would thus be heavily frowned upon, even within one's own House.
