Jazz Documentary with Harvey Pekar

[edit]

I recently watched a promo for a documentary, The View from Cleveland, about the history of jazz hosted by Harvey Pekar and directed by Daragh McCarthy. Should this work be included within the article? I have not viewed the full documentary itself and am not even sure if it has been completed. A quick Google search elicits next to nothing. Any assistance regarding its inclusion and status would be appreciated.

Awards?

[edit]

The entry states: "He has also won awards for essays broadcast on public radio." I'm just thinking, it might be less vague to say which awards. Are we certain it's awards plural? -- Tenebrae 00:06, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I just got into Harvey Pekar. Of all things I am writing a paper about him for my seminar art history class about Marcel Duchamp. I am writing a 25 page paper on how H.P. was influenced by M.D.. However, all the other artists on the list to choose from where, and had to be "up and coming" in the past 4 years. HUH. Erin

Video of him on Letterman

[edit]

Didn't want to link this on the main page - here's a video of his appearance of him on Letterman: http://youtube.com/watch?v=iBr4NxujLvw FranksValli 19:06, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Might as well make the link, methinks; the other existing link is dead: "Harvey's interview on Late Night With David Letterman" ( http://www.screenhead.com/funny/tube/david-letterman-156771.php ) - Michael (talk|contrib) 07:46, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He also had taken on a weird high pitched voice on the show that he claimed was his "nervous voice",not an act. Eh,who knows?

Affinity for Asperger Syndrome?

[edit]

Has anyone noticed that Pekar's work seems to be especially well recieved by those with Asperger Syndrome or autism? Has anyone suggested that Pekar or his friends seem to have these behavioral traits? It almost seems like Pekar and Temple Grandin might get along well. -- 209.155.146.2 22:01, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Banned" on Letterman

[edit]

Wow, after a mere eight appearances, he was "banned" from the late 80s to the early 90s.
Wow, that was a huge "ban". It sounds more like overexposure than banning.
Perhaps that could be rephrased somewhat?
Varlaam (talk) 21:52, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What happened was that Pekar became a sort of favorite of Letterman's, despite his not being the smoothest character on the show; the last time Pekar showed up, he started criticizing GE and being way too annoying, so Letterman stopped having him on the show. Here is a video of the episode. You're correct that it needs more explaining to have any context. Comet Tuttle (talk) 17:25, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GE first acquired control of NBC in 1986. Harvey's appearance soon after was Harvey's first and only mention of "G.E.". To label Harvey as "annoying" for raising discussion about a major company in the news and making headlines for issues such as polluting the Hudson River, building of nuclear plants, and possible influence of the news itself through ownership of the NBC's news operations, is an innacurate description and skirts the political issues involved. In fact, Harvey never got to actually criticize General Electric in his appearance. His comment was essentially, "hey Dave, let's talk about G.E." So Harvey was banned merely for trying to discuss G.E. Whether Letterman himself decided Harvey should be 'censured', or that it was General Electric management which sought political revenge, is a topic worthy of inclusion in wikipedia.Theaternearyou (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 02:59, 24 July 2010 (UTC).[reply]

I agree. I am really surprised to read this article and all it says is that Harvey had eight appearances on Letterman and no mention of the big finish where Letterman basically got mad at him on the air, made fun of him, was making remarks about whether there was a nurse to give him his medication and couldn't a terrorist just come out of the audience and get rid of him and then told him he was never coming back on the show because he wouldn't talk about topics of "general interest" or promote his "Mickey Mouse magazine". The Pekar-Letterman appearances are also a significant part of the movie American Splendor. They deserve some short discussion in this article. TheBlinkster (talk) 02:55, 22 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The sentence "Pekar was not invited back after making an extended tirade on the show." seems to be incorrect, as there was at least this appearance in 1994. Jlkeegan (talk) 22:41, 3 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a source about Pekar's death: Dwight (no family name specified) "Harvey Pekar: He was just drawn that way." Houston Chronicle. July 12, 2010. WhisperToMe (talk) 06:23, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Quotes

[edit]

The quotes that are used that describe Pekar's influence need to not only be cited (which they are) but also have their speaker attributed in the paragraph where they are used. Who is saying that Pekar was so tremendously influential? It can't be just placed there as if it was a fact when it is actually an assertion, an evaluation. 69.125.134.86 (talk) 21:04, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Herschel"

[edit]

In the strips, his parents consistently refer to him as "Herschel". Is that his real birth name or is it just a pet name? - Richfife (talk) 16:10, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

R. Crumb

[edit]

The article refers several times to an R. Crumb, but never links or explains who that is. Can someone add it in? 2604:3D09:C77:4E00:8CB2:ABB2:2702:DB9C (talk) 22:35, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
