- 1813 – John Murray Forbes, president of Michigan Central Railroad 1846-1855; president of Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, is born (d. 1898).
- 1855 – The Hudson and Boston Railroad is chartered as the successor to the Hudson and Berkshire Railroad in New York.
- 1893 – Rudolf Diesel (pictured) receives a patent for the diesel engine.
- 1945 – The Treuchtlingen railway station in Bavaria is bombed during World War II; with over 600 killed and 1500 injured, it is the worst railroad disaster in German history.
