Software companies
[edit]Is it really encyclopedic to link to software companies (even if they are "the largest Massachusetts-based software company") that happen to be headquarted in the town? It's not like Progress makes up a significant portion of the identity of Bedford or anything. Also, the Progress Software page smacks of advertising to me, though I admit it's fairly matter-of-fact. - Okay, I cleaned up the Progress Software Corporation page a little bit, so that it feels less like an advertisement and a little bit more encyclopedic. I'm still going to remove their link from the Bedford page, though, since I don't think it's relevant to Bedford. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bcordes (talk • contribs) 02:51, 22 June 2005 (UTC)
- The high tech companies HQ'd in Bedford are very relevant. It's the #1 thing Bedford is known for in the Boston area. In fact, I came to this page looking for information on just that -- and not any one company. Bostoner (talk) 04:49, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
Sports section
[edit]Dude, somebody do something about the sports section. Each and every word of that is a complete and utter lie. Fix it up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sneakerchamber (talk • contribs) 16:21, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
Libraries
[edit]8 Libraries? Does it count when ~half of them are school libraries? Though they are by all means public, access to them is still pretty much restricted to students + faculty at the respective schools. Also, I only know of five libraries (the 4 school libraries + the general public library), where/what are the other three? As for the gyms, 13 seems to be pretty up there for Bedford. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.216.66.103 (talk) 00:28, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
Bedford Flag?
[edit]Hi- what is the proven basis for the Bedford Flag actually being flown by Bedford's minute companies in 1775? No accounts from participants or eyewitnesses mention anybody carrying a flag on either side, nor is there ever any mention of any such historic flag in local newpapers or books until April, 1875, one hundred years later, when it suddenly appears from nowhere in the Page family. How is the question handled in Bedford? Thanks for your time! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95thfoot (talk • contribs) 20:02, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- Good question, I know the authenticity has been questioned again in recent years but don't know any sources to link. It was taught as fact when I was in elementary school there, and the town built a special environment-controlled room at the town library to house the original flag. Personally, I'm open to the debate, but I'm not sure I'd expect any accounts to mention the flag since the 'legend' says someone just brought a flag they already had, rather than a flag that was supposed to represent the troops officially.--Paddling bear (talk) 15:37, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Just wondered if the citation for the flag's motto was verbatim, or anyone could check it. "The Latin motto on the flag, "Vince Aut Morire", means "Conquer or Die."[4]" I always thought it meant "victory or death" which is close, but reads better (to me) than 'conquor or die'; but then I don't know Latin or it's grammar.--Paddling bear (talk) 03:43, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hello! I know Latin and I can confirm that "Vince Aut Morire" means "conquer or die," it's two commands instead of nouns JezzaSL (talk) 00:22, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
What the heck?
[edit]What the heck is this stuff, under the demographics section:
- This information, of course, doesn't include Paul Revere who, on his famous midnight ride, passed through Bedford and stopped at Bedford Farms to order a Green Monster. He ordered a small size, but then upon realizing that he could share that with his friend Dr. Prescott and the entire invading British Force, he ordered a Kid's size. Paul Revere is among many famous "residents" of Bedford, sharing that honorary title with such celebrities as Nipunn the Viscous, noted Ultimate Frisbee player and dispute settler. Nipunn has singlehandedly decreased the population of Billerica with his Transistor of Doom on the day celebrated by the locals as Itaparook (literally translated as "The Day That Tacos Were Free at Billerica"). This day is celebrated on October 13th of every year, regardless of the year's World Series competitors.
I mean, I love a free taco as much as the next senorita, but.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.49.237.152 (talk) 02:57, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
first resident?
[edit]I don't think Winthrop or Dudley should be listed as first residents, because neither one lived in the area, although I can't recall where I read that. I'll see if I can find that town history book that mentioned the first actual (European) resident.
- "the first resident Governor, John Winthrop and Deputy Thomas Governor Dudley."

- If memory serves me right, the town library in Bedford, MA has a section with documentation on the history of the town. I don't live in the area anymore but happen to be going back on a brief trip there next weekend, so I'll look for any reliable sources documenting the first resident(s) then. Anything else that would be helpful for me to track down while I'm there? Cheers, Jeff Bedford (talk) 02:06, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
Notable residents
[edit]I think the 'Notable residents' section is more interesting with the data about when they lived in Bedford. I realize this data is hard to back up with citations-- maybe we could put the excised data back, but into footnotes with a note as to questionable veracity?

Hanscom Air Force Base residents in Bedford?
[edit]I know the Hanscom Air Force Base CDP is partially in Bedford, but from the maps at Hanscom Family Housing it seems all of the actual on-post houses are on the Lincoln Town side.
This explains why the active duty military dependents are sent to Bedford High, but high school students not dependents of active duty military are sent to Lincoln-Sudbury. The base has the agreement w the former, but the latter is the school district that the students are physically located in. WhisperToMe (talk) 03:10, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
