And have you seen http://www.si.edu/copyright/, where they state:

- No, unless permission has been obtained in advance from the Smithsonian Institution.
All this doesn't look at all like public domain to me... even if most of the images are pre-1923. Before I'd dare use any of these images, I'd want a lawyer's opinion! Lupo 14:07, 11 May 2004 (UTC)
