Disputed identification
[edit]I have no expertise in this matter, but the Italian article on Lavinio neatly contradicts the identification of ancient Lavinium with the modern resort of Lavinio:
“ | L'antico centro di Lavinium, il cui mitico fondatore sarebbe stato Enea, non ha nulla a che fare con l'attuale Lavinio e sembra da ricollegare invece all'attuale località di Pratica di Mare, sul medesimo litorale, ma più vicina a Roma. | ” |
Is this perhaps something akin to Tintagel, where later Romantics attached a mythical name to a known place (or perhaps for marketing reasons)?
In any case, the general location of Lavinium is fairly clear from the Aeneid: it is on the Tiber but near enough to the river's mouth to be within sight of the sea. Q·L·1968 ☿ 09:35, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
- Correction: The location I described is for the Trojan camp, which ought (by the prophecy of the white sow) to be the same as the location of Lavinium, but apparently every other source and commentator on the subject disagrees. So fair enough, they're in different places. Q·L·1968 ☿ 09:08, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
Cryptomythopoesis
[edit]Where did the Luwian or Luvian archaic Indo-European, Indo-Irano-Hittite-affiliated ethny reside, coincidentally? THINK. Coincidentally, Laurentum/Latium/Lavinium/Lavinia sounds NOTHING LIKE (!) the designation "Luvian" or "Luvite" or "Luwian" (ETC.), am I right...?
I suppose I am merely a victim of schizophrenic delusional disorder. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:304:B34B:A940:4136:65CD:7B72:190C (talk) 10:23, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
