Requested move 24 December 2017
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: MOVED (non-admin closure) Galobtter (pingó mió) 07:37, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
Ernest Hollings → Fritz Hollings – This page was moved to "Ernest Hollings" back in 2005 with the reason: "Fritz is a nickname." I don't know how long WP:COMMONNAME has been in effect (in addition to WP:SELFIDENTITY), but article titles should reflect common names whether real ones or nicknames - as is the case for articles of Jim DeMint (Hollings's successor in the Senate), Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders, Ted Kennedy, or Mike Lee. The evidence is overwhelming that Hollings was more commonly known as "Fritz".
- His US Senate website used "Fritz" in the title from 1998 all the way into his final full year in 2004.
- The New York Times has used "Fritz Hollings" in articles dating back to this 1982 profile introducing him as "Ernest F. Hollings" before describing him as "Fritz as he is known" and using "Fritz Hollings" in later paragraphs. This 1984 article is written in a similar fashion.
- In his home state of South Carolina, The State newspaper used strictly "Fritz Hollings" in these articles from 2003 and 2004.
- Hollings campaigned for the Senate using Fritz, as the University of South Carolina Ernest F. "Fritz" Hollings Collection [1] includes audio recordings from his 1992 "Fritz Hollings for Senate" campaign. Also, a 1998 TV campaign ad (1:24 of this video) uses "Fritz Hollings" on screen twice - once in a chyron and another time in a logo graphic. Arbor to SJ (talk) 05:56, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
- Support appears to be the common name and I am not aware of any rule against using nicknames otherwise we would also need to move Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and Scooter Libby just to name a few. Outside of politics we also have Billy Bob Thornton, Bubba Watson, Buster Douglas, and Canelo Alvarez etc.--67.68.21.146 (talk) 06:32, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
- Support. In addition to the sources mentioned above, "Fritz Hollings" has the edge in raw Google results over "Ernest Hollings". Even the books he published rarely credited him as solely "Ernest Hollings" in a formal context - usually it was "Ernest 'Fritz' Hollings" or similar. Nohomersryan (talk) 23:26, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
his involvement in the PMRC should be noted
[edit]The hearings were watched by a large number of Americans, and his comments were singled out. He was heavily satirized by Frank Zappa. 50.111.26.55 (talk) 01:29, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
