About adding the WINE/ReactOS "Notepad"

As you may or may not know, WINE developed a simple text editor that looks like Notepad. Later, ReactOS took it up and is improving it (though not to over-step boundaries of "notepad replacements") and translating it... (which WINE has later re-merged ReactOS' source, even though they're still not entirely interested in improving an intentionally-limited text editor)

So my real question comes in: Where do we fit in the open source (LGPL) version, if at all? Should there be two tables for the Microsoft one and the WINE/ReactOS one? Should they be together separated by a slash, or should only the Microsoft-created editor be included in the table?

Unlike 'notepad replacements', there is room for 'notepad clones', like the reactos one, or even a DOS program like DOSIUS's notepad for DOS. --Wendy.krieger (talk) 07:33, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Another Limitation

In addition to limit of a 64K file size, I have found that Notepad craps out (a technical term) at around 1K lines in the file. Has anyone else noticed this limitation? Two Halves, who has happily moved over to the UniRed text editor 22:42, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

The latest version would be the one that has come out with the latest version of Windows. There really isn't a version "5.1" of Notepad--the "5.1" really refers to the version of Windows (Windows XP). Jason McHuff 07:05, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Please, stop adding the section of George Bush Reference. This bug, as you call it, is the same bug as described in the section of Notepad#Unicode detection. Change title of article to "Windows Notepad"

The article name must change to Windows Notepad. This product is "Windows Notepad" basically everywhere. It's called that since 2001; even 1994.

• The rename (from "Notepad") to "Notepad (Windows)" on 2009-07-21 was a belated improvement.
• The rename to "Notepad (software)" on 2010-06-29 was a mistake.
• The rename to "Microsoft Notepad" on 2016-04-12 was a travesty. Many of the search hits on this less-WP:COMMONNAME are the fault of this article's mistitle. -A876 (talk) 23:50, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

I agree, I have an issue with

One notable feature of Notepad is that it does not support formatting of any kind - if text is copied from a web page and pasted into a word processor, the formatting and embedded metadata comes along with the text, and can be difficult to remove. However, if text is copied from a formatted web site, pasted into Notepad, then copied again from Notepad before being pasted into a destination program, Notepad will have stripped all of the formatting.

Isn't this more of a description of how the clipboard provides data; and also the lack of formatting features is a characteristic of plain text editors ... (duh :D )

Pasting without formatting

Practically all word processors include a "Paste Special..." feature, which allows pasting of text while removing formatting. While some users use Notepad to emulate this, it should be noted that the word processor includes this feature in the first place. 146.94.214.21 19:52, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Poor little notepad

Some people seem to be overly oppressive, when it comes to a have-because-must-have software.. The Bush hid the facts, the 64k limit, the lack of block selection, the etc.. When included?

The introductory paragraph of the article says that Notepad has been included with Windows ever since 1.0, but the info box says it's been included since Windows 95. Obviously, the Windows 95 is a mistake, since I remember it on 3.1, but my Windows use doesn't go far back enough to 1.0 to be able to positively verify it, which is why I didn't change the info box myself. However, I'd assume that the 1.0 information is correct... unless the info box is trying to tell us something else? --Ericdn (talk) 21:52, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Crashed Computer by Removal of Notepad.exe

Let me get this straight, Someone who left an UNSIGNED note on this discussion page, removed Notepad.exe from their computer and the computer OS Crashed! Hmmm. sounds like a visit from the Oregon saskquatch to me. but I give the poster the benefit of the doubt. It could be HOW the program was removed. If Notepad is integral to the operation of Windows(x.y.z) or Windows(name), why would you want to remove it?

There are System Utilities to restore a crashed OS. Finding what crashed the computer is an exercise best left to the specialists.

Now if someone had a link to a Notepad Replacement that cleaned up the problems with the original, I suppose those in Redmond WA might be interested. Richard416282 (talk) 04:51, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

Not formally "Microsoft Notepad"

Hi.

I removed the claim of "formally Microsoft Notepad" from the article because it was not proven. Instead of proof, two exceptional use cases were provided. It is like calling a fir forest a pine forest just because there are two pine trees in the mix.

1. Google search for "Microsoft Notepad" site:microsoft.com proves that microsoft.com rarely ever uses "Microsoft Notepad".
2. What kind of formal name is this that does not even appear in the software user interface? In fact, a commonly used name can very well not be the formal name. (For example, the formal name of MSConfig is "System Configuration" while the formal name of cmd.exe is "Command Prompt".)

To name the article "Microsoft Notepad" is one thing, to call this name a formal name is another.

Correct. It is not formally "Microsoft Notepad". Beyond that, it is formally "Windows Notepad", for a long time. See Change title of article to "Windows Notepad" (2007-03-14), above, despite which it somehow got renamed from "Notepad (software)" to "Microsoft Notepad" on 2016-04-11.

Its Microsoft Store webpage calls it Windows Notepad (since 2019-08-24). People have been calling it "Windows Notepad" since 2001 and 1994 (not counting mentions like "the Windows Notepad" or "C:\Windows\notepad.exe").

The article "Windows Notepad" has redirected here ("Notepad" / "Notepad (software)" / "Notepad (Windows)" / "Notepad (disambiguation)" / "Microsoft Notepad") since 2008. -A876 (talk) 23:50, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Reference 12 leads to 404 error

Hey,

Reference 12 ("Maximum File Size Limits for Notepad". Support. Microsoft. September 24, 2011. Archived from the original on 2016-01-14. Retrieved 2016-10-28.) leads to a 404 error, as the link is either broken or the page has been deleted. Assuming the link was originally correct, should it be removed now the page has been removed? There appears to be no alternative Microsoft Support page that contains the same information anymore.

Is "History" section a violation of WP:NOTCHANGELOG?

One of our dear colleagues, @ViperSnake151, has tried to wipe out most of the "History" section, citing violation of WP:NOTCHANGELOG. ([3]) I've reverted it as egregiously wrong for now, but wanted someone else's third opinion.

If this article is a change log, then how comes Windows 10 version history is not a change log? It has survived deletion once: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Windows 10 version history.

I had specific issues with everything under the "Store vaporware" heading, as the title and talk about Microsoft Store appearing non-neutral and opinionated, especially considering other recent disputes surrounding that section (re: "notorious"). But that was also still a valid reason, as the section only described very trivial changes or a lack thereof. WP:NOTCHANGELOG says that "Common sense must be applied with regard to the level of detail to be included". There is barely anything that is notable. First, I know what's "notable". it's a famous word in Wikipedia slang. It means "I don't support deleting this article." Also "not notable" means "I support deleting this article." It is part of Wikipedia's article deletion voting process. Do not assume that just because I'm newcomer, I'm also an idiot.

Second, don't try to take sentences out of their context. Whatever WP:NOTCHANGELOG says is about "exhaustive logs of software updates," nothing else. And any sense that you've applied so far is anything but common! Waysidesc (talk) 10:15, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

Not in Windows 10

My Windows 10 laptop no longer has Notepad at C:\windows\system32\notepad.exe. Settings -> Optional features offers me the option to uninstall Notepad. The Microsoft Store lists Microsoft Notepad as Windows 11 only and provides a button to "Update Windows". This December 2019 article entitled "Windows 10 Notepad on Microsoft Store is No Longer Supported" was the closest I could find about its removal from the Microsoft Store for Windows 10.

Sadly not. I think that the update last month killed Notepad on my laptop, but now of course I cannot prove when I did last use Notepad. There was talk of it being removed from the store ages ago. Microsoft Blog talked about it in December 2019.
